Based: Across Key College sites 

Salary: £16,216.20pa - £16,511.04pa (depending on experience) 

Hours: 21 hours per week (split over Monday-Friday)

About the role

Can you make Maths and English feel relevant, achievable and even enjoyable?

At YMCA Derbyshire’s Key College, we work with young people aged 16–24, including learners with SEND and EHCPs, helping them develop the confidence, knowledge and practical skills they need for education, employment and everyday life.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic Maths & English Tutor to deliver engaging and inclusive Functional Skills and GCSE teaching across our Key College programmes. You’ll meet learners at their individual starting points, help them overcome barriers and show them how Maths and English connect to the real world.

For some of our learners, success might mean achieving a qualification. For others, it could be gaining the confidence to tackle something they once thought was beyond them. You’ll get to be part of both.

As Maths & English Tutor, you’ll:

• Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills and GCSE Maths and English sessions
• Adapt teaching to learners’ individual starting points, abilities and SEND needs
• Use real-life and vocational contexts to make learning meaningful and relevant
• Assess progress, identify gaps and provide the right support and challenge
• Prepare learners confidently for examinations and assessments
• Work closely with vocational tutors, support staff and SEND colleagues
• Help learners build the Maths and English skills they need for work, independence and their next steps

• A confident tutor, teacher or trainer who can bring Maths and English to life
• Able to inspire learners who may not have enjoyed these subjects in the past
• Patient, adaptable and able to meet a wide range of individual needs
• Confident using assessment to plan learning and demonstrate progress
• Committed to safeguarding, inclusion and high-quality education

Experience of Functional Skills, GCSE or working with SEND learners would be highly desirable.

• This role is about much more than teaching towards an exam. It’s about helping young people see where Maths and English fit into work, independence and everyday life.
• You’ll have the freedom to use practical examples, vocational links and different teaching approaches to help learners understand concepts, build resilience and recognise the progress they’re making.
• You’ll join a supportive Key College team and contribute to curriculum planning, standardisation and quality improvement, while keeping the individual learner at the heart of what you do.
