Occupational Requirements:
This role has two occupational requirements under Schedule 9 of the Equality Act 2010:
1. The postholder must be male. This is because the role involves lone working within a male
residential setting and supporting male residents in circumstances where privacy, dignity,
safeguarding and operational effectiveness require a male worker. Embassy considers this to
be a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.
2. The postholder must be an active and practising Christian who is committed to: Embassy’s
Christian beliefs and able to assent to Embassy’s Statement of Faith. This is because the role
includes leading and participating in Christian discipleship, prayer, Bible-based activities,
evangelism and supporting residents within Embassy’s Christian ethos and mission.
Embassy will keep the application of these occupational requirements under review to ensure
they remain necessary and proportionate.
About Embassy:
Embassy is a Greater Manchester-based Christian charity that helps people break the cycle of
homelessness by providing a home, skills training and wraparound support.
Our approach is to reintegrate people back into society by helping them to find work and a home
of their own, reducing the pressure on local councils. We build our residents’ confidence and give
them the life skills to be independent.
The Support Worker will work primarily out of Embassy Village which is our new community of 41
high-quality homes in Manchester with a village hall and green space for sports, socialising and
growing plants.
Brief Role Description:
The Support Worker plays a pivotal role in Embassy’s mission, supporting and mentoring residents
through the resettlement process. Responsible for delivering tailored training and activities, this
role fosters trust and mentorship while assisting with practical needs like supporting residents with
appointments and social events. Evangelism and discipleship are central to our mission at
Embassy.
Key Responsibilities:
1. To support and deliver resettlement training and scheduled activities to our residents in line
with the Embassy resettlement programme. These tasks will be divided up in differing
proportions according to the skill sets of the Support staff. These include but are not limited
to: shopping and budgeting training, cooking training, work readiness, taking residents to
interviews/work (including accompanying on public transport on their first day, etc.) and
training for residents preparing to move into their own properties.
2. To deliver all support services to our residents from a basis of mentoring and building trust.
These tasks will be divided up in differing proportions according to the skill sets of the Support
staff. These include but are not limited to taking residents to medical or support appointments,
leading prayer and bible sessions, cleaning, sports, social events and creative arts etc. Other
support tasks will involve assisting residents as they move on from Embassy to their next
home and visiting them in their new home.
3. Engage in a mixture of one-on-one and group evangelism, utilising various methods such as
creative arts, sports, Alpha courses, and hosting guest speakers, primarily to current
Embassy residents and recent past residents. Additionally, facilitate outreach activities for
residents to share their faith and participate in other speaking events when required.
4. Collaborate with the team to deliver a discipleship programme for residents, including Bible
studies and prayer sessions, to support individuals in their new-found faith, both among
current Embassy residents and recent departures. Support and sometimes join residents as
they attend church to help them settle in.
5. Treat residents with respect and compassion; use reasonable efforts to establish good
relationships with residents. While we hope that residents will be interested in a relationship
with Jesus, you must deliver the same quality of support and care to all residents regardless
of which faith or no faith.
6. Work alongside volunteers, communicating well with them to ensure that shifts run smoothly.
7. Ensure the well-being and safety of all residents and volunteers by following documented
procedures and acting in accordance with the training provided.
8. Reporting all incidents, complaints, safeguarding issues, procedural failures, practical
problems, breakages and faulty equipment to your line manager or their ‘stand-in’ by the end
of the shift.
9. Complete shift and session reports for each session and significant interaction with residents
at the end of your shift.
10. Update, share learnings, encouraging news, grow in the vision for the mission and look for
ways to feed into weekly team meetings and in general communication.
11. Staff may choose to attend prayer meetings or team prayer days where these fall outside
their normal working hours. Attendance is voluntary and there will be no disadvantage to
staff who are unable or choose not to attend. Staff who do choose to attend on a nonworking day will be given the time back in lieu at a time previously agreed with their line
manager.
12. Perform administrative tasks commensurate with the role.
13. Attend training commensurate with the role as requested by management.
14. Comply with all relevant data protection legislation and/or any Embassy policy regarding data
