Job Overview
The London Borough of Hillingdon is seeking an experienced Housing Advice & Homeless Prevention Officer (SO2) to support the Housing Options service during a period of increased demand.
The post holder will deliver high-quality housing advice and homelessness prevention services, carrying out statutory homelessness assessments, prevention and relief work, and managing a varied caseload in a fast-paced Housing Options environment. The role requires strong knowledge of homelessness legislation and the ability to work under pressure to meet statutory deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as part of the Housing Options duty service, providing housing advice and assistance
- Carry out homelessness assessments under Part VII of the Housing Act 1996
- Deliver prevention and relief duties in line with the Homelessness Reduction Act
- Manage a varied caseload of homelessness and housing options cases
- Conduct homelessness enquiries and investigations
- Draft and issue Section 184 decision letters
- Provide accurate, timely housing advice tailored to individual circumstances
- Work to statutory timescales, service standards and performance targets
- Maintain accurate case records and reports on relevant systems
- Identify and manage safeguarding concerns, making appropriate referrals
- Work collaboratively with internal teams and external partner agencies
- Respond professionally to customer enquiries, complaints and correspondence
- Contribute to service improvement and effective workload management
Essential Experience & Skills
- Proven experience working within a Housing Options, Housing Advice or Homeless Prevention service
- Strong working knowledge of Part VII Housing Act 1996 and the Homelessness Reduction Act
- Experience carrying out homelessness assessments and statutory casework
- Experience drafting Section 184 decision letters
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a pressurised environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Empathy, discretion and a commitment to customer-focused service delivery

Induction:
Office-based induction period of approximately 2–4 weeks depending on experience
