Job overview:
We are looking for dedicated residential childcare team leaders to work in our residential houses with our amazing young people, term time only, 8 hour shifts. We have both full and part time hours available.
About Us:
Mary Hare educates 240 profoundly deaf children at its residential school in Berkshire, and we pride ourselves on our pupils’ achievements at GCSE, A Level as well as B Tech and Vocational Courses. We offer the opportunity to teach highly motivated children, in small classes, where you can make a real difference at this national centre of excellence for deaf education. No knowledge of sign language is required, as we follow an auditory/oral philosophy.
The school offers a holistic approach to care, and this involves carrying schoolwork into out-of-school life. This involves communication with all professionals that work within both the senior and primary schools. These can be teachers, classroom assistants, audiologists, nurses, speech therapists and specialists from cochlear implant teams, social workers etc. but most importantly care staff will have a good communication link with parents, especially those of their key children.Mary Hare is a boarding and day school for deaf children and young people aged between 5 to 19.
Set in beautiful surroundings on a country estate just outside Newbury the boarding (residential care) houses are designed specifically for each age range and provide a home from home for all children who board during term times. Mary Hare is an oral environment, and our children and young people thrive on being able to use their voices.
We are proud of our staff retention and across the homes the average length of service exceeds 8 years, rising to 15 years. We are equally proud of our culture which is welcoming, supportive and professional and our values are embedded in the daily lives of everyone at Mary Hare.
As we welcome more pupils in throughout the year we have opportunities for childcare team leaders in our boarding houses:
- Are you someone who has experience working in residential childcare in a supervisory or Shift Leader role?
- Have you been a youth worker, activity instructor and enjoy enabling and encouraging children and young people?

You will be leading an experienced team of care staff, working a shift pattern which is flexible to the needs of the houses, and which promotes a healthy work life balance in addition to being term time only.
Hours of work: 41 per week

What we need from you
- You have been in a position of supervisory or shift leadership and can demonstrate your leadership style and approach to shift management.
- You have a Diploma Level 3 in children and young people or willing to complete / conclude this.
- You can confidently communicate with children, parents, colleagues and professionals.
- You can actively listen to others.
- The ability to work individually and as part of a team.
- A calm and consistent approach.
- Good written and IT skills.
- Be committed to ongoing professional development
