We have ambitious plans to grow our fundraising and retail activities to help Mountbatten continue to be there for the over 4,500 people who need our care and support every single day of the year. Mountbatten hospice group is a leading provider of palliative and end-of-life care in the UK, supporting over 4,500 individuals at any one time, delivering a wide range of innovative and award winning 24/7 services, across parts of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. We exist to promote and to provide good care and support for those people living with, affected by, or curious about death, dying and bereavement.We are the largest organisation of our kind in the region, with a budget of over £20m and serving a population of over 700,000; and with a 200% growth in the number of people we are supporting in the last four years. Fundraising, alongside retail and commercial income covers around two thirds of our annual running costs, with the remainder coming from NHS and other commissioned services. With costs rising and income sources not always guaranteed, the role of income generation and effective communication and marketing is critical.This new role, as a member of the senior management team and reporting directly to the CEO, will play a strategic role in delivering our fundraising strategy, supporting the further development of our retail portfolio and further strengthening our message and brand.The successful candidate will bring significant experience of leading income generation activity and a strong track record of achieving sustained growth. The postholder will lead a new department, which brings together key functions that deliver and support income generation, including fundraising, retail, communications and marketing. Ideally the candidate will have experience of working within a charity setting, with a sound understanding of the regulatory requirements for fundraising and other charitable activity. Working with the Chief Executive Officer, Trustees and the Senior Management Team (SMT) the person will ensure Mountbatten is proactively seeking to engage with a wide range of audiences and to grow fundraising and retail income as part of securing the long-term sustainability of Mountbatten’s services.As a member of SMT this role will also contribute to the wider strategic leadership and operational management of Mountbatten hospice group. As a senior leader they will lead by example, demonstrating Mountbatten’s shared values in all aspects of their work and demonstrating care, compassion and respect for all service users, families and carers, alongside our supporters, donors, retail customers and fundraisers, as well as Mountbatten’s staff and volunteers.The postholder will also have responsibility and accountability for a range of functions which will be led by operational managers, ensuring a joined up and strategic approach to our fundraising, retail and marketing / communication activities.Senior management responsibilities:To provide a visible, accessible and confident presence, establishing effective, professional and motivational leadership which inspires, empowers and motivates other. Provide leadership for a portfolio of services; ensuring that all activity will contribute to Mountbatten’s strategic aims and providing the highest quality of care and services to patients, service users and the wider community.As a Director support the CEO in managing internal communications, including leading on induction, training and regular engagement activities with employees and volunteers. As a Director support the CEO in managing external relations and stakeholder engagement, acting as an ambassador and advocate for the organisation, including with supporters, donors, community partners, and other service providers. Make a highly effective contribution as a member of SMT to strategic, operational and financial planning, ensuring the provision of high-quality services with a focus on continuous improvement. Ensure the organisation is fit for purpose, working collaboratively with others and leading on organisational change as required Ensuring the meeting of relevant regulatory and legislative requirements.Key Director responsibilities and duties:Income generationTo develop with the CEO, SMT and trustees a shared understanding across Mountbatten of the role of income generation and communications in achieving the charities’ overall aims and strategic objectives. To develop a comprehensive strategy for sustaining and growing income streams, primarily within fundraising and retail to support core services and future growth. To oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive delivery plan for Mountbatten’s strategy for income generation, ensuring this is regularly reviewed and reported to key stakeholders. To work with the Director of Finance and CEO to regular review income generation targets, ensuring they are achievable and identify opportunities for future growth with stretch targets. Lead and foster a collaborative, supportive and innovative culture within the income generation management team and their teams, ensuring a dynamic and flexible approach to achieving shared objectives. Identify and engage with innovative and best practice across and beyond the sector to help develop new income opportunities for Mountbatten. FundraisingDevelop, implement and periodically review Mountbatten’s Fundraising Strategy, ensuring this remains fit for purpose and focused on key priorities for both the Group and for each hospice. Lead on the development of a detailed operational plan for the delivery of the strategy. Ensure there are robust annual and three-year budget plans for fundraising, setting ambitious but achievable targets with clear return on investment for each activity / income stream. Ensure robust supporter stewardship programmes that maximise donor retention and lifetime value. Lead the development of strategic partnerships with businesses, philanthropic individuals and community organisations. Identify new fundraising opportunities and diversification of income sources.Retail OperationsProvide strategic oversight of retail operations to maximise profitability and community engagement, maximising opportunities for cross pollination with fundraising and marketing campaigns. Support the Head of Retail in future development and growth of retail outlets, physical and online sales and associated income streams. Support the Head of Retail to ensure all operations meet financial, compliance and sustainability objectives.Communications, Marketing and BrandLead Mountbatten's communications and marketing strategy to enhance awareness, engagement and reputation. Protect and strengthen the Mountbatten brand across all channels. Oversee an annual and rolling communications and marketing plan with clear focus on key campaigns across services, community engagement, fundraising, retail and other identified priorities. Oversee media relations, public affairs, digital communications, website, social media and marketing campaigns. Ensure consistent and compelling messaging that reflects Mountbatten’s values, impact and strategic priorities. Act as a key spokesperson for the organisation when appropriate.Stakeholder EngagementBuild and maintain strong relationships with supporters, volunteers, community groups, businesses and key external stakeholders. Develop engagement strategies that increase community support, advocacy and awareness of Mountbatten’s services, fundraising activities and retail operations. Work collaboratively with clinical and operational teams to communicate organisational priorities and achievements.Financial Management and GovernancePrepare and manage departmental budgets, forecasts and performance reports, reporting to key stakeholders as required. Ensure income generation activities achieve agreed financial targets and deliver return on investment. Monitor fundraising, retail and marketing/communications performance using appropriate metrics and reporting mechanisms. Ensure compliance with Charity Commission requirements, Fundraising Regulator standards, HMRC, Lottery regulator, GDPR and other relevant legislation. Manage risk within the directorate and maintain effective governance arrangements.Leadership and People ManagementProvide inspirational leadership to fundraising, retail, marketing and communications teams, leading with kindness and providing energy and focus to the work of the department. Foster a high-performance culture focused on collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement. Lead, coach and develop managers and staff to achieve organisational objectives. Promote equality, diversity, inclusion and wellbeing across all areas of responsibility. Overseeing and leading where required on human resource activities including recruitment, appraisals, absence, performance, capability etc.Service Development and InnovationEncourage innovation in fundraising, supporter engagement, retail and marketing/communications approaches. Use insight, data and market intelligence to inform decision-making and maximise opportunities.
