SHASBAH is a small charity that supports people with Spina Bifida and/or hydrocephalus and their families within the Sheffield postcodes. Spina bifida is a neurological condition which develops before birth, where the spinal column does not fully form. Causing nerve damage, continence difficulties and mobility problems throughout life. It can also lead to Hydrocephalus which is the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. The excess CSF increases the size of the ventricles or cavities in the brain leading to pressure on the brain causing a range of lifelong challenges. Sheffield Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus supports people with the conditions and their families to get the most out of life. We do this through advice on form filling, signposting on education, housing and benefits. We offer regular events for members and their carers to come together and spend time with others in similar circumstances. We befriend individuals and introduce them to our community of peer to peer support. We host accessible and inclusive social events and groups to reduce isolation while building confidence and independence skills. SHASBAH also provides small-scale grants to its membership.Volunteers support our activities, help our events to run and our community to grow working with our membership and their families and network. This can be from advice, advocacy and signposting as well as event support to make our activities inclusive and accessible to all.
