Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and proactive Housing Officer to join our homelessness team. The successful candidate will play a vital role in managing homelessness housing services, ensuring tenant satisfaction, and maintaining compliance with relevant regulations. The Housing Officer will be responsible for overseeing tenant relations, tenancy agreements, and property management activities, contributing to the organisation’s commitment to providing quality housing solutions.
Responsibilities
This position is office based but you will be responsible for managing your own case load of around 38 families living in temporary homelessness accommodation. The role involves driving to tenant's homes, completing risk assessments and other paperwork; ensuring safeguarding and repair compliance; signposting to other organisations; assisting with setting up their tenancies, encouraging independence as the tenancy progresses to ensure the tenants are 'tenancy-ready' at the point they move out. You will therefore:
- Act as the primary point of contact for tenants, addressing enquiries and resolving issues promptly and professionally
- Assess tenant's needs and provide support for customers with complex needs working towards the achievement of longer term goals, solutions and aspirations
- Work with the income team and discuss any rent arrears with tenants. Be confident in completing income and expenditure sheets to agree mutually satisfying repayment terms in line with KPI's
- Increase tenants independence to facilitate them moving to more permanent accommodation whether this is private renting or social housing.
- Conduct regular property inspections to ensure maintenance standards are upheld and safety regulations are met
- Liaise with Housing Inspectors and service providers to coordinate repairs and routine maintenance tasks
- Ensure compliance with housing legislation, benefit rules, homelessness processes, tenancy agreements, and organisational policies at all times
- Complete all records regarding tenancies and visits/calls in a timely manner on the different systems
Experience
You will therefore need:
- Proven experience in housing management or a related field is desirable
- Experience of providing person centered support to customers is essential
- Strong negotiation skills with the ability to handle sensitive situations tactfully
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders including tenants, providers, and colleagues
- Confidence in dealing with difficult situations such as discussing housing conditions, rent arrears or safeguarding issues
- A thorough understanding of Safeguarding in order to ensure tenants and their families remain safe and well
- Familiarity with different software packages and Microsoft packages is essential
- Excellent organisational skills with attention to detail in record keeping and documentation
