Job Title: Senior SleepSafe Worker
Salary: £24,500 per year
Hours: 37.5 hours/week (mainly evenings, 5pm–10pm)
Location: Hamoaze House, Plymouth
Contract: Permanent, Full Time
About SleepSafe
Some people arrive at SleepSafe at the hardest point in their lives.
An hour earlier they may have been outside, cold, anxious, unsure where to go next.
By 5pm, they walk through our door and meet two calm, steady human beings who don’t judge, don’t interrogate, and don’t give up on them.
That’s the environment you will lead.
SleepSafe is an evening sanctuary for adults experiencing homelessness, trauma, substance use or ongoing crisis. We work quietly, consistently, and with dignity. Our approach is relational. We expect professionalism, but we also expect humanity.
About the Role
As the Senior Worker, you will anchor the service each evening. Your steadiness will shape the whole shift. You set the tone, hold the boundaries, and make sure every person who enters the room feels safe — including your staff team.
This role is for someone who can stay calm under pressure, read a room, and respond with compassion while still holding firm lines.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Leading a two-person team each shift
- Welcoming guests who may be frightened, tired, intoxicated or overwhelmed
- Making quick, grounded decisions about risk and safety
- Modelling trauma-informed practice through tone, pacing, clarity and warmth
- Supporting newer staff to hold boundaries confidently
- Ensuring handovers and records are accurate and respectful
- Responding to incidents with authority but without escalation
- Helping guests reclaim a sense of dignity, however briefly
What We’re Looking For
- Calm, grounded, reliable presence
- Experience in homelessness, crisis support, addiction, mental health or trauma
- Strong boundaries delivered with respect
- Good writing and recording habits
- Confidence in risk assessment
- Ability to de-escalate and stay steady
- Willingness to lead by example
If you recognise yourself in this — the steady one, the person who holds the room — we’d love to hear from you.
