Volunteer and Engagement Manager

Salary: £39,855 per annum / 36 hours per week / Permanent
Job type: Permanent
Ref: 16029
Heritage is for everybody, and we are here for heritage.
Heritage lives in places and people, memories and stories, artefacts and traditions. It can connect us all to the past, and to each other. It can make us happier, strengthen every community, and help shape society for the better. Everybody should be able to enjoy the benefits it brings.
That's why, as a charity, we care for over a million objects and hundreds of historic sites in every part of England, from international icons to local treasures. And it's why we open them up, share their stories, and find new ways for everybody to enjoy, learn, play, and create.
We are looking for a Volunteer and Engagement Manager to lead our regional volunteer and community engagement team in the North of England. The role is full-time (36 hours per week) and permanent.
The Benefits
- Salary of £39,855
- 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, pro rata, rising to 28 days after 3 years
- Matched pension contributions up to 10%
- Flexible hours
- The opportunity to progress your career within the heritage sector
- Apprenticeship opportunities
- Subscriptions to professional bodies
- Free access to all English Heritage sites for you and up to six friends and family members
- 25% discount in our shops and cafes
- Enhanced maternity, paternity or shared parental leave

- An inclusive working atmosphere where everybody is supported from all backgrounds, religions and with different needs
- Opportunities to go to some of our great live music and history events
This is a great opportunity for a well-organised individual with a proven track record in developing and managing collaborative and equitable stakeholder relationships. You will be an effective and visible leader providing direction and support for your team in the creation, facilitation and enabling of mutually rewarding and relevant participation opportunities with communities from across the north of England - guided by our belief that Heritage is for Everybody.
As the Volunteer and Engagement Manager, you will be pivotal to supporting our aim to create opportunities that make heritage relevant, exciting and accessible to all - enabling millions of people to come closer together through their shared engagement with England's heritage.
You will support our mission by planning implementing, and developing our volunteering and community engagement programme, increasing the diversity of the people we work and engage with and growing our financial sustainability through in-kind support and community fundraising.
Through your team, you will develop new volunteer teams and partnerships to deliver new experiences for our members and visitors at our 'hidden gem' sites, whilst also growing existing volunteer engagement and partnership activity at our free-to-enter sites, maximising opportunities for public engagement with these sites and ensuring they are well cared for.
To be considered as Volunteer and Engagement Manager, you'll need to demonstrate:
- Current understanding of good practice in volunteering and management, community engagement, participation, and partnership working
- Knowledge of relevant legislative requirements relevant to the role
- Understanding of current social trends, different motivations, and the external context of volunteering and participation
- Able to use data insight to develop targeted and effective plans for inclusive volunteering and community engagement
- Strong communication and influencing skills and the ability to work in an inclusive way with a broad range of people
Interviews will be held week commencing 30th June at our regional office in York.
