About Nugent

Nugent is a Liverpool-based charity founded in 1881 that continues the work of Father James Nugent, a Catholic priest and social reformer who provided homes and training for destitute children in Victorian Liverpool. Allied to the Archdiocese of Liverpool and rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, the organisation now employs around 600 people and describes its mission as providing a lifelong pathway of support for individuals and communities in need, so that no one is left behind. Its head office is at 99 Edge Lane in Liverpool, and it works predominantly across Merseyside, Cheshire and the wider North West.

Housing, homelessness and accommodation services

Nugent's adult provision includes dispersed homelessness accommodation, floating support delivered in the community and supported living provided in people's own homes. Named community services include New Beginnings, Cheshire Floating Support, Individualised Community Support and Ainsdale Care in the Community. These sit alongside three residential care settings: Margaret Roper House (a care home with nursing for adults with mental and physical health needs), St Joseph's Care Home (adults with acquired brain injury, neurological conditions and physical disabilities) and Lime House (older people, including those living with dementia).

The charity is also a significant provider for children and young people, running residential children's homes such as The Orchards, Wadham Road, Lichfield Close and Childwall Park Avenue, a step-down home at Lime Grove Cottage, and Marydale Lodge, a secure children's home in St Helens. Community services include a Deaf and Sign Community Service across Merseyside, a weekly food pantry and the Caritas programme.

Who they support

Nugent works with people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, adults with disabilities, brain injury, dementia or mental ill-health, children and young people who have experienced trauma, deaf people and families facing food poverty, primarily in the Liverpool City Region, St Helens, Wigan, Warrington and Cheshire.
