About Babergh District Council
Babergh District Council is a district authority in south Suffolk that works in close partnership with its neighbour, Mid Suffolk District Council, sharing a single workforce, a joint website and a shared headquarters at Endeavour House in Ipswich. Between them the two councils serve around 200,000 residents across a largely rural area of market towns and villages with more than sixty conservation areas and two National Landscapes. They were named Council of the Year in 2024.
Housing and homelessness services
Housing is one of the councils' core services. Babergh is a stock-holding council: it lets and manages its own council homes, runs a repairs service, offers sheltered housing for older, disabled and vulnerable residents, and allocates social housing through the Gateway to Homechoice register. Its Housing Solutions team is the front door for anyone who is homeless or threatened with homelessness within 56 days, offering legal advice, personalised housing plans and, where prevention fails, temporary accommodation. The councils also run Central Suffolk Lettings to open up the private rented sector, operate a duty-to-refer route for partner agencies, take reports of rough sleeping and work with Solo Housing on prevention.
In 2024 both councils adopted a Joint Homelessness Reduction and Rough Sleeping Strategy running to 2029. Its stated vision is that homelessness and rough sleeping are prevented wherever possible and, where they cannot be, are rare, brief and non-recurring. The strategy commits to early intervention, co-production with people who have lived experience, and a county-wide multi-agency approach to helping people settle into sustainable tenancies.
Working for the councils
The councils summarise their approach as "work is what we do, not simply where we go" and operate a hybrid mix of office, home and remote working where business needs allow. Recent adverts list a benefits package that includes 26 days' leave rising to 31 after five years, the Local Government Pension Scheme, wellbeing and employee assistance support, private healthcare options, an electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme, paid volunteering days and learning and development opportunities. They state a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
Typical roles
Vacancies are advertised through the Suffolk Jobs Direct portal on a dedicated Babergh and Mid Suffolk site. Housing-related openings tend to sit within Housing Solutions, tenancy and estate services, private sector housing standards (such as a Healthy Homes Manager role) and strategic housing delivery. A homelessness job-seeker should look for housing options and homelessness prevention officers, tenancy sustainment and support roles, and temporary accommodation or lettings posts, with most jobs based at Endeavour House in Ipswich or working across the two districts.
