About Walsall Council

Walsall Council is the metropolitan borough council for Walsall in the West Midlands, part of the Black Country. The borough is centred on Walsall town but also takes in Bloxwich, Aldridge, Willenhall, Darlaston, Brownhills and a number of villages. The council is based at the Civic Centre on Darwall Street and runs its customer-facing services through a central Customer Experience Team and a network of Walsall Connected centres in libraries and community buildings, which give face-to-face help to the borough's most vulnerable residents.

Housing and homelessness services

Housing sits within the council's Environment, Housing and Growth directorate, and homelessness work is delivered by the Housing and Welfare Support team under the council's Money Home Job umbrella. The team helps people who are homeless or at risk of losing their home, offering financial support towards rent, help to find somewhere to live and support to rebuild their lives, including for people involved in the sex trade. A dedicated rough sleeping service gives day-to-day support to people on the streets, helping them access housing, keep a tenancy, claim benefits and move into work or education, with emergency provision during severe weather and an out-of-hours line. The council works with a Housing First partner for people with complex health and social needs, accepts duty-to-refer notifications and publishes a homelessness strategy. It does not hold its own housing stock; social housing in the borough is provided through housing associations, so council housing roles focus on options, prevention, welfare support and private rented standards.

Working at Walsall Council

The council offers flexible working across most roles, including part-time, job share, term-time, flexitime and hybrid arrangements, plus a career break scheme and extended carers' leave. Staff receive a minimum of 25 days' leave rising with service, plus nine bank holiday and concessionary days, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme, an employee assistance programme, workplace mental health, menopause, domestic abuse and equality champions, and a 15 per cent discount on corporate leisure membership. Its stated values include being collaborative, accountable, respectful, honest, supportive and fair. Applications are made through a supporting statement rather than a CV. Recent adverts in the housing directorate include a Customer Change Agent leading financial inclusion and the Crisis and Resilience Fund at Grade G10, around £48,700 to £51,900.

Typical roles for homelessness job-seekers

  • Housing options, homelessness prevention and welfare support officers
  • Rough sleeping and Housing First liaison roles
  • Financial inclusion and crisis fund coordination posts
  • Reablement and adult social care key worker roles supporting vulnerable adults

At the time of review there were no housing-titled vacancies live; the council's Oracle site groups its jobs under Environment Housing and Growth, Children's Services and Adult Social Care and Health.
