Who Turning Point are
Turning Point is a national health and social care social enterprise. It is a registered charity and company limited by guarantee, regulated by the Care Quality Commission and registered as a provider of social housing. Founded more than 60 years ago, it now employs over 5,400 staff at around 283 sites in over 270 locations across England and supports more than 197,000 people a year. Its head office is at America House, 2 America Square, London EC3N 2LU, and its recruitment team works from Manchester (0161 238 5200). The organisation's stated belief is that everyone has the potential to grow, learn and make choices, and its careers strapline is "Inspired by Possibility".
Services, including housing and homelessness
Turning Point's largest service areas are substance use treatment, mental health (including talking therapies and crisis support), learning disability and autism services, acquired brain injury, sexual health, employment support and healthy-lifestyle programmes. Within these it runs a growing number of housing-related services. A Supported Accommodation business unit provides Ofsted-regulated supported accommodation for young people, including four schemes in Chorley and Leyland in Lancashire where staff manage both the care and the housing side, working with landlords, commissioners, housing benefit teams and local authorities on tenancy management and move-on planning. Its drug and alcohol services employ specialist rough-sleeper and homelessness recovery workers, for example in Leicester, Bristol and South Somerset (Yeovil and Mendip outreach), and its learning disability and mental health services run supported living and residential homes across the country.
Where they work and who they support
Services are commissioned by local authorities and the NHS in every English region, from Cumbria and the North East through Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, the Midlands and East of England to London, the South West and Kent. People supported include adults with drug and alcohol problems, people in mental health crisis or recovery, adults with learning disabilities and autism, young people leaving care or at risk of homelessness, people in the criminal justice system and rough sleepers with multiple needs.
What it is like to work there
Turning Point welcomes applicants without previous experience and provides a full induction and training programme, with clear routes from support worker through senior and advanced practitioner roles to team leader and service manager. Peer mentors can complete a 12-week accredited Level 2 course. Pay is set against published bands with annual progression; recent adverts show support workers on around £24,800 to £26,000 for a 37-hour week (about £12.84 to £13.45 an hour) with higher rates for 45-hour contracts, recovery workers on roughly £25,900 to £30,300, London roles with an Inner London weighting, and service managers up to £50,000 to £60,000.
