📍 Liverpool, Merseyside

Verified

The Whitechapel Centre is Liverpool's leading independent homelessness charity, founded in 1975 to meet the needs of homeless people in the city. Registered as a charity (number 1013060) and company (number 2623071), it is based on Langsdale Street in Liverpool city centre and is open 365 days a year. Its mission is to prevent and resolve homelessness, social exclusion and housing poverty through practical, tailored support so that each person can find and keep a home and reach their potential. In a recent year it worked with more than 5,000 people to end or prevent their homelessness.

Accommodation and support services

The charity sees a pathway that runs all the way from the street to settled accommodation, independence and employment, and its services are organised around that journey. In 1992 it set up one of the country's first floating support services, a housing support scheme for young people, and it now runs a wide mix of outreach, accommodation and resettlement projects.

  • Advice centre and street outreach for people sleeping rough, plus hospital in-reach
  • Pathways and City Region assertive outreach and intensive support
  • Harm reduction service in a supported accommodation setting for up to 27 people with substance misuse or mental health needs, delivered with SHAP Ltd and Liverpool City Council
  • Phoenix House and a new overnight assessment hub for rough sleepers in the Baltic Triangle
  • Shared accommodation, recovery support, resettlement and Steps to Sanctuary for people at risk of homelessness
  • Family services including Yates Court, Belvidere Family Centre and children and young persons support
  • Wirral support service and meaningful engagement pathways (daily activity sessions)

Where they work and who they support

The core of the work is in Liverpool, with services also delivered across the wider Liverpool City Region including Wirral, Halton, St Helens and Knowsley. The people supported are rough sleepers, people living in temporary accommodation, people at risk of losing their home and homeless families, many of whom are dealing with addiction, mental or physical health problems and long-term exclusion.
