Housing & Homelessness

📍 London, Greater London

Verified

Southern Housing is a charitable housing association and one of the largest landlords in the UK, with around 80,000 homes and more than 167,000 residents across London, the South East, the Isle of Wight and the Midlands. Its roots go back to 1901, when the businessman Samuel Lewis left money to build affordable homes for people in need; the first estate opened in Islington in 1910. The organisation has since grown through a series of mergers with other charitable housing providers, including Hearth and Home, founded in 1945 for older homeless people, and through taking on former council homes. Its head office is at Fleet House, 59-61 Clerkenwell Road, London EC1M 5LA, with local offices in areas such as Croydon, Kent, Sussex, Hampshire, Surrey, Berkshire, Birmingham and the Isle of Wight.

Homes and services

Southern Housing provides social and affordable rented homes, shared ownership, private market rent, student and keyworker accommodation and homes for sale. Its stated vision is to create communities where everyone has a safe home in a place where they are proud to live, and it emphasises being local despite its size. A dedicated Tenancy Sustainment Team supports residents with multiple and complex needs, domestic abuse, anti-social behaviour, hoarding, and the transition into a first tenancy for people who were formerly homeless or are leaving care, referring people to specialist internal teams and external agencies. Financial resilience officers help residents manage rent, income and welfare benefits, and lettings, ASB and neighbourhood teams manage day-to-day tenancies.

Care, support and independent living

The Care and Support arm delivers CQC-regulated services on the Isle of Wight, including care homes, extra care, home care and personal budget schemes based in Newport, Ryde and Sandown. Its Independent Living service runs sheltered housing, extra care and over-55s schemes for older residents across Berkshire, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Surrey and West Sussex, as well as schemes such as Dwyer House in Birmingham, with a Local Link model of scheme-based support. Supported housing is also delivered in partnership with managing agents and specialist third-party providers. The organisation says its approach is to help people live as independently as possible and to treat everyone with dignity, compassion and respect.

Working at Southern Housing

The careers site describes a workplace where people can make a difference every day, with active internal progression. Benefits include 27 days' annual leave rising to 31, plus bank holidays and a day off for your birthday, the option to buy or sell up to five days, a pension with employer contributions of up to 10 per cent, life assurance at three times salary, a healthcare cash plan with dental and eyecare cashback, flexible and hybrid working where the role allows, season ticket loans, retail discounts and a cycle-to-work scheme, and a learning and development programme with wellbeing support. There are equality, diversity and inclusion networks for colleagues, and the organisation publishes gender and ethnicity pay gap reports.

Typical roles

Vacancies on the Southern Housing careers portal are grouped by function (officer, manager, advisor, analyst, tradesperson, cleaner) and by business area. Roles of interest to housing and support job seekers include care and support workers and senior care and support workers on the Isle of Wight, bank care staff, independent living and scheme managers, tenancy sustainment and financial resilience officers, lettings officers, ASB officers, customer repair advisors, and estate services staff, alongside trades, asset management, service charge and corporate roles. Adverts state the salary, contract type, location and advertising end date, and many roles are hybrid.
