About North Kesteven District Council
North Kesteven District Council (NKDC) serves the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, in the East Midlands, from its offices on Kesteven Street in Sleaford. It is an Investors in People Gold employer and an equal opportunities employer, and it is one of the minority of district councils that still owns and manages its own council housing, with a stock of around 3,900 homes. In 2026 the Regulator of Social Housing upgraded its judgement on the council's landlord service, recognising improvements in home condition, re-letting of empty homes, complaints reporting, tenant involvement and contractor performance.
Housing and homelessness services
The council's Housing Options team provides advice and assistance to every eligible household that is homeless or threatened with homelessness. It works through the statutory prevention duty, drawing up a plan to keep people in their current home for at least six months, and the relief duty, helping to secure alternative accommodation over 56 days. Where someone is in priority need and has nowhere to go, interim or temporary accommodation can be provided in hostels, shared housing, bed and breakfast or the council's own furnished or unfurnished properties, although the rural nature of the district means emergency places are not always local. Practical help includes rent-in-advance and deposit payments, transport to accommodation, negotiation with landlords, lenders and family, security works recommended by the police, referrals to a Housing Support Worker and to money advice.
NKDC also manages Rough Sleeper Accommodation Programme units at Ginter House in North Hykeham under a dedicated lettings policy, takes part in the Lincolnshire Severe Weather Emergency Protocol and the county-wide Duty to Refer protocol, and allocates its homes through the Lincs Homefinder choice-based lettings scheme. The tenancy side of the service covers repairs, rent and arrears, tenant involvement, a regular "At Home" tenant magazine and support for tenants affected by domestic abuse.
Who they support
The service supports council tenants, applicants on the housing register, households facing eviction or family breakdown, people leaving prison or hospital referred by public bodies, and rough sleepers across Sleaford, North Hykeham and the surrounding villages.
