Who Maidstone Homeless Care Are

Maidstone Homeless Care began life in 1986 as Maidstone Christian Care, when founder Patricia McCabe and students from Maidstone Girls' Grammar School started a soup run serving sandwiches and hot drinks from the boot of a car, backed by a £500 grant from Maidstone Round Table. The charity was formally registered in 1989 and became a company limited by guarantee in 1995, the same year it opened its first day centre. It moved to its current base at 15 Knightrider Street, Maidstone in 2004, was renamed Homeless Care in 2013, and adopted its present name, Maidstone Homeless Care, in 2024.

Services

• The Maidstone Day Centre, offering meals, laundry, showers, a clothes bank, sleeping bags and tents, a postal address, and help with ID documents, benefits claims and job searches
• Goodsell House, supported housing registered with Maidstone Borough Council providing a safe home to 10 homeless men, together with one-to-one support, life-skills coaching and help moving into permanent accommodation
• Food For Thought, a food bank supplying parcels to agencies supporting households at risk of homelessness
• On-site access to a mental health nurse, osteopath, optician, dentist and other professionals

In 2024 the Day Centre recorded 3,570 visits and served over 3,200 meals to 604 clients, while Goodsell House welcomed new residents and moved a quarter of its residents into permanent homes. The charity is overseen by a board of volunteer trustees alongside a small paid staff team.

Working at Maidstone Homeless Care

Staff are based at Knightrider Street and work closely with a team of volunteers to deliver the day centre and supported housing services. Roles include day centre support workers who provide practical and emotional help to people sleeping rough, and dedicated support workers such as the Goodsell House key worker who guides residents toward independence. The charity values patience, compassion and a genuine belief in helping people rebuild their lives.
