Who Light Project Peterborough Are
Light Project Peterborough (LPP) is a Peterborough-based charity (registered charity 1159764) that describes itself as a city-focused, city-change organisation supporting people who are homeless or in need. Its main base is The Garden House, at Gravel Walk in the Minster Precincts in the heart of Peterborough city centre, which opened its doors on 8 October 2018 to extend the support LPP had previously offered through the Peterborough Winter Night Shelter. LPP has been actively involved in sourcing accommodation for people since 2015.
Services
- The Garden House day centre, open seven days a week, offering food, drink, clothing, hot showers and laundry facilities to people sleeping rough in Peterborough, with at least one new person coming through its doors each day
- Accommodation support: working with Peterborough City Council and other partners to help people move into temporary accommodation such as hostels or bed and breakfasts, and creating multi-agency action plans to progress people towards more permanent housing
- An on-site programme of visiting partner services at the Garden House, including the council's Housing Team, the Dual Diagnosis Outreach Team (mental health), GP and nurse consultations, CGL Aspire's drug and alcohol recovery support, and a mobile gym and fitness programme
- A Community Garden project at the Garden House, run with volunteers, offering guests a therapeutic space and practical activity alongside their support
LPP supports people sleeping rough or at risk of homelessness in Peterborough, working closely with the council's Rough Sleeper Outreach Team, StreetLink referrals and a wide network of local health, housing and recovery partners to help people move off the streets and towards stability.
Working at Light Project Peterborough
Frontline roles include Project Worker and Lead Project Worker posts based at the Garden House and out in community settings, including visits to guests in their accommodation. Project Workers provide practical, person-centred support to people experiencing homelessness, vulnerability or disadvantage, helping them address immediate needs, access services and build towards greater stability and independence. Lead roles combine frontline support with day-to-day operational leadership of the team. LPP also relies heavily on volunteers working alongside paid staff.
