Who Key Community Are

Key Community (also known as Key, or South Tyneside Churches Key Project) is a South Tyneside charity that has spent over 30 years preventing youth homelessness and tackling poverty. It began as a grassroots organisation rooted in the local community, and most of its team still live in South Tyneside, working from bases across the borough including Hebburn and South Shields. Key's mission is to help young people and families build the skills and stability they need to live independently, flourish and become confident members of their community.

Services

  • Key Homes: 24-hour staffed supported accommodation for young people at risk of homelessness, including Askins Lodge (an 18-bed purpose-built scheme in Hebburn) and the Askins Cottages, plus Flavia House and Strickland House, two supported homes in South Shields, and a set of nine "move-on" flats for those ready for semi-independent living
  • Key Support: accommodation outreach helping young people settle into their first tenancy, alongside education, employment and training support, including the Guy Readman Rising Stars programme for disadvantaged 15-18 year olds
  • Key Prevention: family mediation and a whole-family Intervention Service working to prevent family breakdown, the leading cause of youth homelessness in the area, plus school-based support in South Tyneside secondary schools
  • Key Wellbeing and the Key to Life Foodbank, tackling mental health needs and food insecurity alongside the housing-focused work

Key works closely with young people and their families to find the right solution for each individual, from keeping families together through mediation to providing a safe home and a route to independent living.

Working at Key Community

Roles span residential and night-support workers in supported accommodation (such as concierge and security posts), accommodation outreach and support workers, family mediators and intervention workers, employability and education support staff, and foodbank and community roles. Staff work directly with young people and families facing homelessness, relationship breakdown or poverty, and the charity emphasises building trusted, person-centred relationships that help people gain confidence and move towards independence.
