GAP Supported Housing is a registered charity, founded in 1999 and based in Hexham, Northumberland, providing safe, short-term supported accommodation for adults experiencing homelessness in West Northumberland. Its Hexham-based service supports up to 13 residents across four shared flats, with staff on site day and night, and has supported over 1,000 individuals since it was founded.
What they do
GAP delivers 24-hour, person-centred support alongside accommodation, helping residents address the underlying reasons behind their homelessness rather than simply providing a place to stay. Support includes life skills training, activities to build self-esteem, and help accessing education or employment, with the aim of moving people on into independent housing. The charity recognises that recovery from homelessness isn't linear, and describes its approach as meeting people where they are.
Working at GAP
Support staff at GAP bring a wide range of experience in supported housing, and many complete training towards an NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care or equivalent; some also bring lived experience of the challenges faced by residents. The charity pays the Real Living Wage, including for sleep-in and on-call duties, and its staff are registered with the Street Paws Dog Champion Scheme, reflecting a dog-friendly service. Typical roles include Tenant Support Worker/Concierge positions covering flexible contracted hours with sleep-in and on-call responsibilities, working weekends and bank holidays as part of the rota.
