Who they are
Durham County Council is the unitary local authority for County Durham, one of the largest councils in the North East, with responsibilities spanning social care, education, planning and housing.
Housing and homelessness services
The council runs a dedicated homelessness prevention service, helping people find safe accommodation, including places in refuges for those fleeing domestic abuse, and provides temporary accommodation for households assessed as being in a priority group, alongside a Personal Housing Plan for those who do not qualify.
People leaving prison can access housing advice ahead of release through a dedicated line, and the council also runs Durham Key Options, its choice-based lettings scheme for accessing social and housing association homes across the county, alongside statutory duty-to-refer arrangements with partner public services.
