About Barnsley Council

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council is the unitary authority for the borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, supporting a population of around 243,000 across the town of Barnsley and the surrounding former mining communities. Its main offices are at Westgate in Barnsley town centre. Housing and homelessness services

Barnsley's Homeless and Housing Advice service is the first point of contact for anyone who has nowhere to live, is at risk of losing their home within 56 days, or cannot safely stay where they are. Officers draw up a personal housing plan with each applicant, setting out what the council will do and what the applicant will do to keep or find a home, and they assess local connection and priority need. The service has specific pathways for 16 to 18 year olds, care leavers, armed-forces veterans, people being discharged from hospital and those fleeing domestic abuse. Options offered include council housing, housing association homes, help with private-rented deposits, shared ownership and supported accommodation with floating support. It runs a freephone line, an out-of-hours number and online referrals, and provides emergency overnight accommodation for rough sleepers when temperatures fall to zero or below.

The council also coordinates the Barnsley Homeless Alliance, a network of local organisations and charities that together provide food, clothing, housing, medical care and substance-misuse support to people on the streets, alongside community meals run by Barnsley Churches Drop-in and Action for Barnsley Homelessness. Council housing itself, around 18,000 homes, is managed on the council's behalf by Berneslai Homes, an arm's-length management organisation that handles lettings, rent, repairs, money advice and tenant support, while the council retains landlord and building-safety responsibilities and has built more than 200 new council homes since 2011.
