About Barnet Homes

Barnet Homes is the arm's-length management organisation (ALMO) that looks after council housing for the London Borough of Barnet in north London. It was set up in 2004 and since 2012 has been part of The Barnet Group, a local authority trading company wholly owned by the council. Barnet Homes manages roughly 15,000 council-owned properties and runs the borough's housing options and homelessness service on the council's behalf. The group employs more than 900 people and describes its work as making a difference to over 14,000 families across Barnet's communities.

Housing and homelessness services

The Housing Options service, based at 2 Bristol Avenue in Colindale, is the first point of contact for residents who are homeless or at risk. Its stated priority is to help people stay in their current home, and only where that is not possible to look for an alternative. The team handles all housing applications for Barnet, assesses whether applicants have a housing need, and runs the register. Barnet Homes provides and manages Emergency Temporary Accommodation, offers guidance for rough sleepers and for veterans, and supports the private rented sector through tenancy deposit help, repairs advice and a landlord incentive scheme.

Beyond homelessness, Barnet Homes delivers day-to-day housing management for tenants and leaseholders, repairs and maintenance, sheltered housing and adaptations to help people live independently, benefits and money advice, and employment programmes such as BOOST. Its sister organisations widen the picture: Opendoor Homes is a registered provider building and letting affordable homes, Bumblebee is the group's lettings agency, and Your Choice Barnet provides adult social care including residential care, extra care schemes and supported living for people with learning and physical disabilities.

All services are focused on the London Borough of Barnet, working from offices in Colindale with care and support schemes located around the borough. The people supported include council tenants and leaseholders, households in temporary accommodation, people facing homelessness, rough sleepers, older residents in sheltered housing and adults with disabilities.
